Bhubaneswar, Aug 16: Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur is all set to establish a world-class medical college and research institute in collaboration with US-based University of California.

According to reliable sources, the institute will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) California University on August 18.

The proposed medical college and hospital will have facilities for world-class research in various branches of medicine.

The establishment of the medical college at IIT Kharagpur will open a new chapter in the history of IITs in the country.

The medical will offer graduate, postgraduate and research programmes in medicine and biomedical engineering.

The proposal for introduction of medical education in IITs was cleared by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development recently.

Eminent academician and Director of IIT Kharagpur Damodar Acharya and authorities of other IITs in the country had taken the initiative to introduce formal medical education in the IIT and taken up the matter with the Union Minister Kapil Sibal.

The proposal had subsequently received the approval from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
