Three persons killed during Orissa Rath Yatra

Bhubaneswar: Even as people across Orissa celebrated the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath with great enthusiasm and traditional fervour on Monday, at least three persons were killed and one injured by coming under the wheels of the mighty chariots in different parts of the State.

The main festival in the seaside town of Puri passed off peacefully. A few policemen, however, sustained minor injuries while controlling the crowd during the pulling of the chariots.

But the festival of chariots brought bads news in three other places such Bhubaneswar, Blongair and Malda village in Sundargarh district.

One person was injured in Berhampur town in southern Orissa as a chariot overturned with too many people boarding it before it wa to be pulled by the devotees.

Fifteen-year-old boy Samir Swain, a resident of Prasanti Vihar locality of Bhubaneswar, died on his way to the hospital after he was run over by the wheels of a chariot near the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT University) near Patia.

Aman Priyadarshi Panda, a Class II student who had gone to witness the Rath Yatra with his father and sister died in Bolangir town in western Orissa, die after coming under the wheel of a chariot.

The boy's father and sister also sustained injuries while trying to save him. Five-year-old Aman also died on his way to the hospital.

Similarly, 22-year-old youth Amin Patra was killed at Malda village in Sundargarh district by getting crushed under the wheel of a moving chariot.

The three tragic incidents hampered the festive mood in the respective areas. The police of the respective localities have registered cases pertaining to the accidents and investigating into the matter.
