Puri (Orissa): Lord Jagannath along with elder brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Goddess Subhadra returned home tonight amidst display of spectacular fireworks, fire ball play (banati) as Daita servitors conducted them to the sanctum sanctorum of the Srimandir.

Chanting Jai Jagannath and Haribol, thousands of devotees witnessed the Pahandi procession when the deities were taken inside the main temple. The ceremony was to continue till late in the night.

Earlier in the day, the deities were offered fruit Bhog after observance of Mangala Arati, Abakash and Mailam.

The Pahandi was conducted after Sandhya Arati and Sandhya Dhupa.

The preparation for the Pahandi began with fixing of ladders onto the chariots and in the sanctum sanctorum onto the Ratna Simhasan.

The Daita servitors escorted the deities one after another amidst music concert of drums, cymbals, trumpets and bugles coupled with the dancing devotees.

Mahalaxmi the consort of Lord Jagannath who felt humiliated as she was left behind during the Lords nine day sojourn to Gundicha temple along with sister Subhadra.

She resisted the entry of Lord Jagannath into the temple by closing the main doors on the face of Jagannath. Two sets of the servitors of Lord Jagannath and his consort Mahalaxmi enacted the play.

Mahalaxmi orders closure of the temple main gate to teach the Lord a lesson for not taking her in the nine day pleasure trip to Gundicha temple. For that Mahalaxmi maintains a close vigil from Chahani Mandap (a special platform located atop the right side of the temple main gate) observing the activities on the chariot of Lord Jagannath. While she allows Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra inside through the main gate she orders to close the gate for Lord Jagannath.

To appease Mahalaxmi, Lord Jagannath offers Rasagolas and cajoles her to forgive him. After prolonged persuasion she allows the Lord inside. This is the only occasion when Rasagola Bhog is offered to the deities by the devotees.

The Daitas spent hours to install the deities in their seat atop the Ratna Simhasan. Then the regular temple priests take over and resume the rituals starting with Mahasnan (the grand bath) followed by a fresh set of rituals concluding with Badasinghar and Pahuda.

The Mahaprasad could be available to the devotees on the Sunday. The homecoming ceremony of the deities is called Niladree Bije and with this the Rath Yatra festival comes to an end.
