Jajpur (Orissa), Jan 24: About 600 tribals, said to be the supporters
of the Visthapan Virodhi Janmanch, demolished a boundary wall of Tata
Steel's proposed hospital in Kalinga Nagar area of this district on
Thursday.
This is the second such incident involving the Janmanch supporters who
were opposing Tata Steel's proposed steel plant project at Kalinga
Nagar since January 2, 2006 when 14 tribals were killed in police
firing while opposing land acquisition for the venture.
The mob, armed with their traditional weapons, marched towards the
proposed project site at Maniapatana village and pulled down the
boundary wall of about 300 metres length.
The demolition of the boundary wall was stated to be the fallout of a
group clash between supporters and opponents of the steel project that
took place on Wednesday. At least four persons had sustained injuries
when the two groups clashed near Mirigichara village
The Janmanch has virtually stalled all construction activity of the
proposed Tata Steel plant in the area over the past two years.
Meanwhile, the Janmanch held a meeting at Ambagadia and took a
decision to continue its agitation against the proposed six million
tonne capacity steel plant project of the company.
Janmanch general secretary Rabindra Jarika said the opposition against
the Tata Steel project would continue in Kalinga Nagar.
"No construction activity should be taken up till issues pertaining to
displacement and rehabilitation are fully resolved," Jarika said.
When contacted, Kalinga Nagar Additional Superintendent of Police
Kartik Chandra Swain said that the situation was under control and
they were closely monitoring the situation.
A case will be registered against the people who caused damage, Swain added.
It may be recalled that the Janmanch supporters had demolished the
boundary wall of the proposed Rs 10 crore hospital in December last
year. The boundary was reconstructed with police protection a few days
ago.
