Efforts on to develop railway in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, April 7: Chairman Railway Board Kalyan Coomar Jena on Monday said that a sum of Rs 1,050 crore had been allocated in this year's rail budget for development of railway in Orissa.

Addressing a press conference at the East Coast Railway headquarters here, Jena said the gauge conversion of 90 km Naupada-Gunupur would be completed during the current fiscal.

Jena, who has come to visit to different ongoing projects in the State and review the work progress, said that the Rail Vikash Nigam Ltd was undertaking the survey for doubling of the Banspani-Jakhapura rail
line. Jakhapura-Haridaspur third line has also been given to RVNL for survey.

About the proposed world-class station at Bhubaneswar, Jena said construction of 25 world-class stations had been planned in the country on Public Private Partnership scheme.

An expression of interest is being floated to the State government for its acceptance and involvement. The Chinese Railway authorities will prepare the master plan while the stations will be built up PPP mode,
Jena informed.

Regarding Khurda-Bolangir railway link, Jena said more funds had given to this project in the recent budget. There is no question of stoppage of this project.

Speaking on the proposed Puri-Konark rail line, Jena said this line would be constructed if the State government provided free land for the purpose.

About the performance of Indian Railways, Jena said that Indian Railways had achieved spectacular progress by achieving a cash surplus of Rs 25,000 crore.

He said the operating ratio had also improved to 76.03 that were better than any railway of the world. Despite all the prevailing problems, Indian Railways has achieved improvement in freight loading by over 60 million tonnes, Jena said.
