Raja Acharya, prime accused in Judo coach Biranchi Das murder case

Bhubaneswar, May 5: Gangster Raja Acharya, prime accused in the sensational murder of Judo coach Biranchi Das, surrendered before the Goa police in Panaji on Monday.

According to initial reports received here, the gangster was taken into custody soon after his surrender.

The gangster was on the run since the murder of Das on April 13 evening in Bhubaneswar.

Orissa police, however, claimed that the gangster was arrested by the Goa police on the basis of information supplied by them.

Bhubaneswar Police Commissioner Binay Behera told the media that they had electronically tracked down the gangster and accordingly their counterpart in Goa arrested the accused.

Behera said the gangster would be brought to Orissa on Wednesday.

A Bhubaneswar court had on Saturday declared the gangster an absconder.

The court passed the order acting upon on a petition filed by Bhubaneswar police.

The police had moved the court with a prayer to declare the gangster an absconder after they failed to nab him despite conducting a series of raids in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Mumbai and various other places.

Police had said that if the accused did not surrender within a fortnight, steps would be taken as per the law to get his property attached to the case.

Akshaya Behera alias Chagala, co-accused in the case, had surrender before the police in Bhopal a few days after the murder.

During his interrogation, Chagala had told the police that it was Raja Acharya who shot dead the Judo coach and he accompanied the gangster to the spot of the crime.

The police, however, have so far not been able to know about the exact motive behind the killing of Das, the former coach of marathon boy Budhia Singh.

In the course of their investigation, the police had questioned senior IAS officer Priyabrata Patnaik, Oriya video album actors Leslie Tripathy and Bidusmita, and several other persons in connection with the case.
