Raja Acharya in police custody

Bhubaneswar, May 10: Prime accused in the Judo coach Biranchi Das murder case gangster Raja Acharya has reportedly denied his involvement in the crime making it difficult for police to solve the case.

Acharya has not confessed to the crime during his interrogation by senior officials of the State police during the past four days, sources said on Saturday.

Police Commissioner for the twin-city of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Bijay Kumar Sharma, however, has said that he was happy over the outcome of the interrogation of the accused.

Acharya's interrogation had started on Wednesday after he was brought to the State by a special police team from Goa where he had surrendered on May 5.

The city police had obtained five days' police remand for the accused from a local court on Wednesday to quiz him in connection with the murder of Das that took place on April 13 evening. The police remand of the accused is set to expire on Sunday.

As regards the police seeking extension of the police remand for the accused, Sharma told reporters here that they had not taken any decision on the question so far.

According to sources, the police were likely to seek extension of police remand for the accused as they had not been able to gather concrete evidence about the involvement of the accused as well as motive behind the murder.

Police were likely to seek extension of the police remand for the accused to interrogate him further as the accused had said no to subject him for narco-analysis and brain-mapping tests during his police custody.

In the written response to the police plea before the court seeking remand, the accused had had said that he was not ready for such tests during his remand period.

Meanwhile, the State unit of the Youth Congress staged road blockade agitation at several places, including Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Cuttack, demanding CBI probe into the Judo coach Biranchi Das murder case.

The Youth Congress workers also demanded the resignation of two leaders of the ruling Biju Janata Dal – Narendra Swain and Prakash Bastia – from the party.

Gangster Raja Acharya had allegedly told the police that he had met the two BJD leaders in the past with a view to join the party.
