Vedic Math: A simple way to hone mathematical skill

By Panchanan Sahu
Bhubaneswar, July 10: For excelling in mathematics, delve into India 's ancient past. That's what the Bhubaneswar Genius Academy (BGA) teaches.

The ancient system of Vedic Mathematics, now on a revival path, is being used by many in view of its focus on simplification of algebraic and arithmetic operations.

"Those trained in this system are able to solve complex mathematical problems in a simpler and much easier way," Sanjukta Sarangi, director of the academy, the

only institute imparting Vedic Math in the Odisha capital, says.

Based on the ancient text of the teachings called Veda, the Vedic Math has its origin from the Atharva Veda—the last of the four ancient Hindu scriptures – Rik, Sham, Yadur and Atharva – and explained to students using many examples.

The system makes use of the ancient problem solving methods involving complex numbers and helps in simplifying the basic mathematical operations like multiplication, division, square, square root, cube, cube root and its applications including auxiliary fractions and recurring decimals.

On the salient features of Vedic Mathematics, Sarangi says the system involves mental calculation. It helps enhance the speed in calculation and concentration. Apart from this, Vedic Math also functions as a magical tool which brings down finger counting and helps in making intelligent guess works.

The exercises given to the students at the end of each chapter help them in increasing their speed. "Many students in the academy make very difficult additions in five to 10 seconds," Sarangi says adding "it is a question of practice.

"As students progress through the system, they invent their own methods which help them to be creative and develop interest in the subject," she says.

Meanwhile, the ancient problem solving method is also helping to the students facing competitive examinations in a great deal by saving their time while doing complex mathematical problems.

Developed by the sages of India , Vedic math, which was lost due to the advent of modern Math, is a gift given to this world. The system is much simpler and enjoyable than modern mathematics.

The subject was brought to the forefront over half a century ago by Jagatguru Shankaracharya Shri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaj of Gobardhan Math, Puri. He has interpreted the system in the modern context broadly using 16 sutras (formulas) and 13 sub-sutras (smaller formulas).

Encouraged by the performance of the students, several schools in the city have evinced interest to hold classes for them. "But it is still at a nascent stage," she says.

The academy originally set up to give training in UCMAS (Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic Systems) by using the ancient Chinese tool – the Abacus, organizes classes both in Vedic Math and UCMAS simultaneously.

Under the tutelage of Sarangi, the system made its foray into Odisha in February 2002 when the first centre of BGA was opened at Palashpalli here. It has since helped scores of students learn the nuances of mathematics and solve difficult calculations with ease, interest and pleasure.
